The Chosen: Come and See

I have a confession. I’m worthless with tech. I’ve wanted to post more content on this site and certainly more frequently, but I completely suck at getting the words, images, and videos onto the platform, even though I’m paying for it. So it kept moving to the bottom of my to-do list.

I’m still not at all skilled, but this is close to my heart. So here goes …

If you read my last entry, you know I like to binge (TV and books, not food) 🤥 My sis kept urging me to watch this show called The Chosen. I was deep into Marvel superheroes though, and put it off. Well, she was relentless. Even mailed me the first two seasons on DVD. We have several Apple TVs, a Roku and Apple in my bedroom, but I haven’t seen a DVD player in about a decade, so I had an excuse not to watch.

A bit about the show. It’s the first multi-season TV production about the life of Jesus Christ, shown through the eyes of those who surrounded Him. And it’s entirely crowdfunded. No commercials. And, as I found out when I finally chose (see what I did there?) to watch it, super easy to view.

I gotta tell you, I was blasted. Almost all Christian shows or movies seem to focus primarily on the death and resurrection of Jesus. The Passion of the Christ, for example. Or if you see the apostles much at all, they’re old men. (Fun fact: the 12 apostles were probably all in their teens when they started following Jesus; only Peter was at least 20 by the end of Jesus’s three-year ministry).

The Chosen starts with Mary Magdalene, who was possessed by seven demons. You also meet Simon Peter and Andrew, his brother, gambling and fighting. And Matthew, the infamous tax collector, who was ready to turn them over to the Romans for tax debt. I could say more, but I don’t want to spoil it. Because I highly recommend this show. More than any other I’ve ever seen.

Even if you’re not a Christian, this is a compelling story. It shows Jesus with a sense of humor. You see people who might be like you, hitting rock bottom. It sticks to Scripture, but fills in the blanks of what else might be going on. Here’s a peek at that: John 3:16 on film

The Chosen has two seasons out now, and the third starts filming next week. Dallas Jenkins, the director and main force behind the show, says they’ve planned seven seasons. I binge-watched the first two seasons in a day, and now have seen each episode five or six times.

How can you watch? Download the app on your smartphone or tablet and cast to your TV. Or if you have Apple or Roku, download the app and watch directly there. All episodes are also on YouTube, Peacock, Amazon, and many other streaming services. You don’t have to sign up for the app. It doesn’t even ask for your email. No in-app purchases. It’s also available in 100+ countries, with a goal to get it to a billion people.

I’m just doing my part to encourage everyone to come and see it. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed. I have so much more to write about this show, but I want some feedback from you first.

Until then, happy viewing! Oh, and just for kicks and giggles, check out the website campaign: http://www.TheChosenSux.com
